Time:Line emits mellow gold light as it spins through a supple blend of Nicolay's soulful musicality and Kay's swaggering storytelling. A testament to the Internet Age, the first release on Nicolay's new label, Nicolay Music, represents a relationship that began on music message board, Okayplayer.com, and continued as the two shared tracks and vocals back and forth between North Carolina and Houston. Though it moves quickly from sparkling horn blasts to dark themes of death and greed, Time:Line is surprisingly coherent. The sing-along-able melodies of "The Lights" and "Through the Wind" complement the more heady lyrical concepts in "I've Seen Rivers" and "When You Die," while Nicolay's wide range of musical experimentation expand, breathing beneath precise lines from Kay. It takes a minimum of three full listens to really appreciate what's going on here, so take some time with Time:Line, and reap the rewards of cross-country wav file transmission.
